The main objective of this project is to develop an interactive simulation training system to instruct SME operators in the eleven areas of good business practice, as defined by the SAEF SME Excellence Model. The SAEF (with the Department of Trade and Industry) defined the following objectives: The South African Excellence Foundation (SAEF) SME Excellence Model is aimed at the fastest growing industrial and service sector in South African economy -
Small and Medium Enterprises. A characteristic of this sector is that SME companies often lack professionally trained managers, who are unable to implement quality management processes. Poor management and business practice amongst SME leads to a high failure rate. Traditional training methods, including the existing SAEF SME Excellence Model, tend to be text-based. They do not lend themselves to effectively train people without well-developed (English language) literary skills. English is used as the primary training medium in most training material- ironical considering a very low percentage of the South African population have English as their first language. Users will also be guided through interactive material and prompted to respond, describing their current situation. A combination of generic and SME owner-manager responses to 121 questions, incorporating each of 34 Criterion Parts will be generated as a report. By using virtual reality (VR), and other visual cues as communication tools, the training experience can be made visual, transcending verbal and written communication methods.
